Austin TX

Some motorists have inquired if there’s any free or complimentary roadside assistance service in Austin Texas and surrounding cities. The short answer as of the writing of this blog is yes, but that free complimentary roadside assistance is only available on certain designated sections or portions of certain freeways and during certain days and at certain hours. Lol “(certain)”
That free roadside assistance is provided by the Texas Department of Transportation and is known as the Austin Highway Emergency Response Operator (HERO) Roadside Assistance Program. You can visit their site here to view their coverage map and times of operation per the color coded freeways.
In short, that program is not intended to respond to motorists stranded in parking lots, at home, or even in the general area of the cities they serve but only on the designated freeways and possibly the adjoining access roads as we have seen them there assisting motorists. The programs initiative and main objectives are to assist stranded vehicles get out of the lanes to prevent vehicle accidents that can cause major traffic congestions, injuries or fatalities to motorists.
Due to the great help that the program has provided since it’s beginning, those freeways run smoother and are much safer. You probably have seen them once or twice when the HERO trucks and their operators are helping stranded motorists, they turn on their bright LED strobe lights, directional arrows as well as set up orange traffic cones behind their truck and the stranded vehicle to isolate it from oncoming traffic. If you happen to see them or any other vehicles with their hazard lights on please slow down or move over to give them space and avoid accidents.
